Shropshire Willow Tit Survey

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude at your response to my request for help with Willow Tit surveys. It’s very much a trial year and I haven’t even been able to try the survey myself yet. The method has been used to great success last year in Staffs and Powys and I have had help from people directly involved in those surveys so I am confident that it will work and we will gather some vital information on this rapidly declining species.

Ywilti 010 e (www.grayimages.co.uk) (A)_lightou can download documents needed for this survey, including the survey instructions, blank and example survey forms and an MP3 file for use in the playback (see bottom of page). I have tried to make the survey instructions as comprehensive as possible, so that it should provide answers to most questions that people may have. I am doing this purely as a volunteer, and whilst I am available to discuss and answer queries as best I can, I hope people will be able to read the instructions and then get out and have a go with minimal input from myself. If issues arise, please let me know and we can try and resolve them.

I envisage this as the first year of several and hopefully we can attempt to get good coverage of the County over the course of the project and perhaps follow up with more intensive scientific study in hotspot areas.

The following link will take you to a map of potential sites across the county:

Sites in green have already been assigned a surveyor, while sites in red are unassigned priority sites where we have confirmed or likely records in the past.  Grey sites are those with possible previous records or potential.

I can’t guarantee every location will have Willow Tit and they may only be present in a small part of any given site. That’s part of what the survey is about – finding all of this out! There is also quite a variation in size of area so you may only be able to do one site or a few small ones – I shall leave that to you. Also bear in mind, not all sites are publicly accessible. Please don’t trespass. Let me know if a site is inaccessible for any reason.

If you have not already done so, please look at the map of survey sites and choose one or more you may be interested in. Then let me know so that I can put your name against it and sort a map out for you.

Maps for those who have already put themselves down for a site will be emailed shortly.

Please note that you are not committed to anything, but if you cannot carry out a survey for a site that you have requested, please let me know asap, in case anyone else has expressed an interest in that site.

If anyone does not have access to a printer to print off their map and forms for the field, please let me know and I can try to help with this.

Good luck and I hope to hear good news about Willow Tits coming in very soon. Please let me know how you get on and I will do likewise.

Kind regards
